Is Sushi at Whole Foods Good?

Is Whole Foods Sushi Expensive

Genji Sushi was a beloved mom-and-pop shop in Philadelphia prior to its contract with Whole Foods. If you are a sushi lover like me you know there is mom and pop sushi, and then grocery store sushi.

Fresh sushi made in a sushi restaurant always taste better, its fresh and just hits different. Whenever sushi is rolled up and placed in the fridge it often loses its freshness.

Whole Foods sushi is no exception, if you buy Whole Foods sushi right after it has been rolled and you get it before it loses that freshness, its not that bad. But the longer it sits in that refrigerated section it turns into “grocery store sushi”. The rice often feels harder, the inside ingredients just don’t taste as fresh.

Overall, for a grocery store sushi its pretty good sushi, but it is still grocery store sushi.

The Reviews…

Reviews of Whole Foods sushi remain high – many consumers consider it very good for grocery store sushi. However, it cannot compare to most restaurants since it just is not fresh.

You have one thread on Reddit who do not enjoy it and feel that it was priced way too high. Another Redditor said it was actually decent for grocery store sushi. I guess it can be based on personal preference or if one sushi roll happens to taste better than the other on a given day.

Food Safety

Whole Foods takes food safety very seriously in all its stores. Over 230 food additives are outright banned because of safety concerns, and they follow all allergy protocols to the letter. The sushi is made fresh on-site from sushi-grade ingredients to prevent the risk of contamination. You are very unlikely to become ill from sushi at Whole Foods.

Is Whole Foods Sushi Expensive?

Sushi at Whole Foods is quite pricey compared to other grocery store sushi, but this is to be expected from this brand. Sushi at Whole Foods is on par with the price of many sushi restaurants.

Whole Foods is a fresh and healthy grocery store, it is known as a “upscale” grocery store and I wouldn’t expect their sushi prices to be any lower.

Final Thoughts

Whole Foods does sell sushi, which is provided by Genji Sushi. They offer a wide variety of sushi rolls, including traditional options like California rolls and spicy tuna rolls, as well as more unique options like the Crunch roll and Dragon roll.

The sushi at Whole Foods is made with fresh ingredients and sustainable seafood, but some reviewers said that the sushi can lose its freshness after sitting in the refrigerated section for some time. Overall, Whole Foods sushi is considered as a good option for grocery store sushi but personal preference and freshness can vary.

Lastly, sushi available at Whole Foods is healthy to eat, it’s a great snack or a quick meal. It is still grocery store sushi, so if you want the best and the freshest sushi, I still recommend a sushi restaurant.
