Popcorn isn’t only a snack for your visits to the movie theater. It’s also great to snack on at home, for a movie night, or just as a quick and relatively guilt-free snack.
There are many different options on the market, and this article will help you to make an informed decision about which popcorn to buy. In particular, this is about the question
Boom Chicka Pop vs. Skinny Pop, What’s better?
Skinny Pop is pretty good. How does Boom Chicka Pop compare to it?
On one side, you have a product that started in a family’s garage; on the other, you have a company backed by Pepsi-Cola.
Let the battle begin!
Boom Chicka Pop
In 2001, Angie and her husband started selling popcorn – on a fairly small scale, producing everything in the family garage.
By 2010, the demand grew, and the couple had to make a few important decisions, including a name change of their product and introduction of more flavors.
Today, Angie’s is part of Conagra and not produced in a family garage any longer, though Angie and her husband are still involved.

The last one is divine in its own right. You can also get that one from Amazon, and it’s worth every penny.
What are the Ingredients in Boom Chicka Pop?
To keep the comparison fair, I am choosing each brand’s basic (sea) salted version. Boom Chicka’s popcorn includes
Popcorn, sea salt, and a little sunflower and/or canola oil.
That’s a simple list – without anything artificial; that’s what I like when I see ingredient lists.
Is Boom Chicka Pop Vegetarian or Vegan?
All Boom Chicka Pop flavors are vegetarian, but only three are suitable for vegans.
- Sweet and Salty Kettle Corn
- Sea Salt Popcorn
- Light Kettle Corn
Skinny Pop
Skinny Pop popcorn started as a company that hand-produced its first few thousand bags of popcorn. It all started in 2010.
But as it is, things change. The popcorn became popular, the company had to change how it works, and of course, everything’s done with machines by now. In addition, the original company became part of Hershey’s in late 2017.
Where Do I Buy Skinny Pop?
Skinny Pop is a popular popcorn snack, so it’s not hard to find. Go to the snack section of grocery stores, Target, Walmart, convenience stores, gas stations, and other retailers that sell a good selection of snack foods, and you’ll usually find a few Skinny Pop flavors if not all of them!
Online shopping with Amazon is even easier if you can wait for the delivery. There are some good deals to be had. Here are my favorite options.
- Two big bags of Skinny Pop one is the classic flavor, and the other is spicy. It’s great if you know someone who doesn’t like spicy food, so you can give them the original one and keep the other all to yourself (or the other way around).
- Twelve boxes of Skinny Pop buttery popcorn (3 bags in each box) This is a great buy if you eat a lot of popcorn.
What Skinny Pop Flavors Are Available?
Skinny Pop is available in the following flavors.
- Original
- Sea Salt
- Buttery
- White Cheddar
- Cinnamon and Sugar
- Sweet and Salty Kettle
- Sharp Cheddar
What are the Ingredients in Skinny Pop?
The original Skinny Pop popcorn is made with the following.
Popcorn, sunflower oil, and salt.
That’s a nice and short ingredient list. Of course, flavored versions have more ingredients (e.g., it won’t be surprising that the sugar and cinnamon one has sugar and cinnamon instead of salt).
Is Skinny Pop Vegetarian or Vegan?
While all Skinny Pop popcorn flavors are suitable for vegetarians, only some are fine for vegans.
Vegans need to avoid the following flavors (because of dairy).
- buttery
- white cheddar
- sharp cheddar
Comparison Questions
Which Is More Affordable?
You don’t want to spend a fortune on snacks, so let’s look at which popcorn is friendlier to your bank account. I looked at prices from various stores to calculate the average cost per oz.
Boom Chicka Pop | Skinny Pop | More affordable
Salted | $0.67 per oz | $0.29 per oz | Skinny Pop |
Sweet and Salty | $0.49 per oz | $0.68 per oz | Boom Chicka Pop |
Skinny Pop is a far better choice than Boom Chicka Pop if you want affordable, salted popcorn. When it comes to a sweet and salty version, though, it’s the other way around.
Which Has The Better Nutritional Values?
The last round had no clear winner, so let’s check whether the nutritional values make our decision easier.
Boom Chicka Pop | Skinny Pop | Better
Serving size | 3 ¾ cups (28g) | 3 ¾ cups (28g) | neither |
Calories | 150 | 150 | neither |
Fat | 9g | 10g | Boom Chicka Pop |
Sodium | 150 mg | 75 mg | Skinny Pop |
Total Carbs | 16g | 15g | neither |
Protein | 2g | 2g | neither |
Skinny Pop wins by a small margin here, as you can’t overlook the smaller amount of sodium.
Do Boom Chicka Pop Or Skinny Pop Have Gluten-Free Options?
There’s nothing to worry about for coeliacs and people who want to avoid gluten for other reasons.
Popcorn is naturally gluten-free.
Final Thoughts
When I compared Smartfood to Skinny Pop, Skinny Pop was the winner by a small margin. In this fight, however, Skinny Pop loses to Boom Chicka Pop.
Boom Chicka Pop is the more charming brand, and their popcorn is delicious. I mentioned it before, but go and try their chocolate popcorn. It’s great stuff.
I also like that Boom Chicka Pop takes care when it comes to the ingredients of its products. You won’t find nasties in their ingredient lists, which is rare for a snack food company!
